Dan Stauber is in his 11th season as head coach of the Yellowjacket men's
hockey program. In ten previous seasons Stauber's teams have been
consistent, racking up 192 wins.
He ranks among the active leaders in wins and winning percentage among
Division III head coaches. Stauber took the reins of the program in August of 2000 when Steve Nelson resigned and enjoyed immediate success. His first team set several school records, including most wins in a season (30), longest unbeaten streak (23 games) and longest winning streak (19 games). They claimed
the school's second NCHA regular season championship and second straight
NCHA playoff title. The team entered the NCAA Final Four regarded as a
favorite, but fell short and had to settle for third place. The following season, the team again claimed the NCHA playoff championship and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. They defeated Plattsburgh 5-0 in the semifinals to avenge their loss from the year before and eliminate the defending national champions. The next night they came from behind to defeat Norwich 3-2 in overtime and claim the school's second national championship, and first since 1976. Despite the lack of NCAA success since 2002, there have been success stories for the 'Jackets. In 2004-05 they were the last unbeaten team in Division III hockey and for a time were ranked number one in the USCHO weekly poll. That season set the school record for fewest losses in a season (3). The following season, they returned to the national tournament after winning the sixth NCHA playoff championship in school history. In 2008-09, his team won the NCHA regular season title for the second time, and the third time in school history. They qualified for the NCAA tournament, finishing one game short of a tenth trip to the NCAA Frozen Four. And with the team success came individual success. In Stauber's tenure, there have been 17 players who received All-American honors. There have been 27 All-NCHA selections, 33 All-WIAC choices and 54 players receive NCHA All-Academic honors. Five of his players - Nate Ziemski, Kyle Nosan, Baron Bradley, Dustin Cosgrove and Brian Bina have been named the Max Sparger WIAC Scholar Athlete of the Year. Mike Wiggins was named NCHA Player of the Year in 2005, and Chad Beiswenger received the same honor in 2009. Stauber himself has received honors, being named NCHA Coach of the Year in 2001 and the AHCA Division III Coach of the Year in 2002. In 2009 he was named WIAC Coach of the Year. In recent years, Stauber has served on the NCAA Championships Committee and the NCAA Rules Committee. Stauber's coaching career began with a season at UW-Eau Claire. There,
he worked on the staff of Troy Ward, a former University of Wisconsin and
Pittsburgh Penguins. That
season the Blugolds finished 18-14-2, placing second in the NCHA, their best
finish in NCHA history. From there, he spent three seasons at Waupaca
High School and then three more at his alma mater, Duluth Denfeld High
School. He joined Steve Nelson's staff as an assistant coach in 1998.Stauber has been chosen to coach at numerous USA Hockey Select Festivals over the years. Most recently , he worked with the Select 14's and Select 15's at Lake Placid, N.Y. As a player, Stauber starred at Duluth Denfeld High School before embarking on a four-year playing career at UW-Superior. In those four years, Stauber appeared in 99 games, scoring 47 goals and 71 assists for 118 points. Stauber was a team captain during his final two years and led his team in scoring twice. Stauber also played one professional season in Boras, Sweden before jumping into coaching. Stauber and his wife Julie reside in Hermantown, Minn. They have three children - Nora (18), a freshman on the swimming team at Minnesota State University-Mankato, Owen (17), a junior defenseman on the Hermantown High School hockey team, and Natalie (15). |
