| 'JACKETS POUND ST. MARY'S |
| What a difference a day
makes. Twenty-four little hours. On Friday night against
St. Thomas, the 'Jackets suffered a special teams implosion,
carrying them to their first loss of the 2008-09 season. On Saturday, it was special teams, specifically the power play, that led the 'Jackets to their third victory of the season. Ten different players scored goals, five of which came on the power play, as the 'Jackets rebounded from their only loss with a 10-3 win over St. Mary's in front of 311 at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn. Fifteen different players recorded points, as the offense, which hadn't broken the ten-goal barrier since the 2004-05 season, hit double digits for the second time in four games this season. Three players had three-point nights, while six more registered two points. And if not for a rash of late penalties that put St. Mary's on extended power plays, the 'Jackets may also have picked up
their second shutout of the year. The 'Jackets opened the scoring six minutes into the game when captain Rob Turville (Sr. Olds, Alberta) picked up his third of the season from Tyler Flether (Jr. Calgary, Alberta) and Seth Reda (Sr. Palmer, Alaska). It went to 2-0 at 11:21 of the period when Kevin Huck (Sr. Rochester, Minnesota) netted his second of the season from Brayden Kolisniak (Fr. Edmonton, Alberta) and Matt Wiest (So. Enchant, Alberta). The assists marked the first career points for Kolisniak (first career game) and Wiest (12th career game). The game was blown open in the second period as the 'Jackets scored four times. Jesse Junkermeier (So. Minnetonka, Minnesota) scored his first of the year at 1:35 of the period from Fletcher and Turville. Reda then scored his first of the year, the eventual game-winning goal, on a power play at 10:52 to make it 4-0. Junkermeier and Ryan Kuntz (Sr. Regina, Saskatchewan) assisted. Braden Desmet (Jr. Strathmore, Alberta) scored his third of the season a few minutes later at 13:08 to make it 5-0. He was assisted by Brian Bina (Jr. Grand Forks, North Dakota) and Andrew MacKenzie (Sr. Terrace Bay, Ontario). The 'Jackets closed out the second period scoring at 16:35 when Kuntz scored his first of the year from Fletcher, making it 6-0 after two. It was more of the same in the third period, as the 'Jackets scored four more to build a 10-0 lead before the Cardinals scored three goals late. Chris Wilson (Jr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) scored his second goal of the season from Logan Isley (So. Bonnyville, Alberta) just 16 seconds into the period. The final four goals of the game for the 'Jackets came on the power play. Art Clark (Jr. Bloomington, Minnesota) picked up his third of the year from Wilson at 6:05. A few seconds later, Eric Bausano (Sr. Laurium, Michigan) scored his first of the year at 6:51 to make it 9-0. Desmet and MacKenzie assisted. The 'Jackets closed out the scoring at 10:09 when Kolisniak scored his first career goal, assisted by Junkermeier and Kuntz. With the game in hand, the 'Jackets got into penalty trouble late and the Cardinals capitalized, scoring three times in the six minutes. Anthony Bohn scored a power play goal at 14:10 to make it 10-1. Matt Staehely scored a power play goal at 16:48 to make it 10-2 and Steve Murphy scored at 18:48 to make the final, 10-3. One would imagine that a game with a lopsided score such as this would have lopsided shots on goal as well, but that was not the case tonight according to the St. Mary's stat keepers. The 'Jackets narrowly outshot the Cardinals, 49-45 in the game. Chad Beiswenger (Sr. Moorhead, Minnesota) made 42 saves in the game, a figure that is sure to help his season and career save percentages. Scott Pederson, making his first start of the year for St. Mary's, played all 60 minutes of the game and made 39 saves. The 'Jackets, after going 0-8 on the power play last night against St. Thomas, went a remarkable 5-7 with the man advantage tonight. They are now firing at 40.9% through the first four games of the season. The Cardinals went 2-11 in the game. The 'Jackets were penalized 12 times for 24 minutes, while St. Mary's took eight penalties for 16 minutes. The 'Jackets (3-1-0) return home for a pair of games against MIAC opponents next weekend. It's alumni weekend at UW-Superior, and those returning home will see the 'Jackets take on Hamline (2-0-0) on Friday night. The Pipers are the defending MIAC champions and took a pair of games on the weekend from UW-River Falls and UW-Stout. Game time on Friday, November 7 is 7:05 p.m. from Wessman Arena. The game can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in via the Internet at www.kuws.fm. Jon Garver will have the call. |
