'JACKETS BEAT AUGGIES, GAIN WEEKEND SWEEP

After Friday's emotional win over Hamline, the 'Jackets needed to make sure they came out with the same intensity that they displayed on Friday.  As the old saying goes, Friday's win means nothing if you lose on Saturday.  They couldn't afford to lay an egg in a non-conference game on home ice.  The 'Jackets came out and they delivered, scoring three unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 win over Augsburg at Wessman Arena, gaining the weekend sweep.

It marked the first time the 'Jackets swept a weekend series since the final weekend of the 2006-07 season when they swept a home-and-home series against St. Scholastica.

The 'Jackets came out flying and held a major territorial advantage in the opening ten minutes of the game.  Dominating play, the 'Jackets played a physical game and seemingly won every race to every loose puck in the period.  They opened the scoring at 5:03 when team captain Rob Turville (Sr. Olds, Alberta) took a centering feed from Tyler Fletcher (Jr. Calgary, Alberta) and put it home to make it 1-0.  Ryan Kuntz (Sr. Regina, Saskatchewan) also assisted.  It went to 2-0 a few minutes later.  Jeff Herman (Sr. Cranbrook, British Columbia), making his first appearance of the season after being injured early, took a perfect feed in the slot from Kevin Huck (Sr. Eden Prairie, Minnesota) and was in alone with the goaltender.  Herman deked to the backhand and beat Augsburg goaltender Andrew Kent for his first goal of the season at 16:16.  Seth Reda (Sr. Palmer, Alaska) also assisted.  The goal was the first for Herman in 22 games going back to his sophomore year.

In the second period, things got away from the 'Jackets a little bit.  Penalties became a big part of the period, as there was a steady parade of players in white jerseys heading to the sin bin.  The multiple power play opportunities finally caught up to the 'Jackets, as Augsburg got on the board at 11:08 on a goal by Mario Mjelleli.  Later in the period, while shorthanded, Nick Guran got past Yellowjacket defenseman Kent Detlefsen (Fr. Lakeville, Minnesota), who pulled him down.  Guran was awarded the penalty shot, and he was successful, tying the game 2-2 at 16:53.  But less than two minutes later the 'Jackets took the lead again, and this time held it for good.  Huck made a great rush to the goal and got a shot away that Kent stopped.  The rebound sat in the crease and Braden Desmet (Jr. Strathmore, Alberta) banged it home to make it 3-1.  Art Clark (Jr. Bloomington, Minnesota) also assisted on the goal that came at 18:10.  And the 'Jackets weren't done.  Before the end of the period they would add one more as Chris Berry (Jr. Calgary, Alberta) scored the unassisted goal, letting the wrist shot go from between the circles that beat Kent between the pads to make it 4-2.  Berry's goal, his third of the year, came at 19:28.

The 'Jackets closed out the scoring late, as Huck scored his third of the year in tight at 16:55 of the third period.  Desmet and Logan Isley (So. Bonnyville, Alberta) had the assists.

Once again, Chad Beiswenger (Sr. Moorhead, Minnesota) got the start in goal for the 'Jackets, and he finished with 27 saves in the game.  Andrew Kent made 26 saves for the Auggies.

The 'Jackets took 12 penalties for 24 minutes, while the Auggies took eight for 16 minutes.  Augsburg was 1-7 on the power play and also had the penalty shot goal, while the 'Jackets went 0-4 with the man advantage.  They were scoreless on the power play over the weekend.

The 'Jackets (5-1-0) will jump into NCHA play next weekend, traveling to UW-Stout on Friday, November 14.  A year ago, the 'Jackets won a pair of 1-0 games against the Blue Devils.  The game in Menomonie ended on an overtime goal by Logan Isley.  Game time on Friday is 7:30 p.m. and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 7:10 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in via the Internet at www.kuws.fm.  Jon Garver will have the call.
