'JACKETS FLATTEN FORESTERS

They are few and far between, but there are those nights when you just know a team isn't going to lose; you know the game is a mismatch.  That was the case at Wessman Arena on Friday night.  The 'Jackets took the opening faceoff and simply drove the puck down the collective throat of Lake Forest, cruising to a 5-0 win, and stretching their winning streak to six games.

It's the longest winning streak the 'Jackets have had since winning seven straight from January 31 to February 28, 2003.

Braden Desmet (Jr. Strathmore, Alberta) enjoyed a huge game in front of the home fans, notching three goals and assisting on another.  Desmet conceivably could have scored six goals in the game, as he hit two posts and was also robbed by a brilliant pad save in the second period.

Desmet got the scoring started with a pair of goals in the first period, the first coming on a power play just 3:16 into the game.  Desmet picked up a rebound of a Kevin Huck (Sr. Eden Prairie, Minnesota) shot in the right circle and pushed it past Forester goaltender Brandon Kohuch to make it 1-0.  Desmet made it 2-0 at 10:13 of the first, scoring an unassisted goal, again on a rebound.  This time Desmet took the original shot from the right circle that Kohuch stopped, but he followed to the net, and buried his own rebound.

The lone goal of the second period once again came courtesy of Desmet and Huck.  Desmet made a nifty move in the right circle and fed perfectly across the goal mouth to Huck, who lifted the puck over the outstretched body of Kohuch to make it 3-0.  The game went to 4-0 just 1:37 into the third period as Logan Isley (So. Bonnyville, Alberta) finished off a nice passing play for his fifth goal of the season.  Chris Wilson (Jr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) and Talon Berlando (So. Drumheller, Alberta) assisted.  Desmet then closed out the scoring and completed the hat trick at 13:50 of the third.  Desmet had the puck in the left circle, dangled around a Forester defender, then faked forehand and went to the backhand, beating Kohuch to make it 5-0.  Desmet now leads the 'Jackets with eight goals and 15 points on the season.

The offense was paced by Desmet's four-point night, while Huck and Seth Reda (Sr. Palmer, Alaska) had two points each.

Kohuch, who had to feel as though he was on an island by himself in the game, finished with 50 saves.  Chad Beiswenger (Sr. Moorhead, Minnesota) made just 18 saves in bowling his second-straight perfect game.  It was Beiswenger's third shutout of the season and the 12th of his career at UWS.  That ties the school shutout record, set by Nate Ziemski, from 2000-2003.

The 'Jackets took six penalties for 12 minutes and went 1-7 on the power play.  Lake Forest was penalized eight times for 16 minutes and was 0-5 with the man-advantage.

The 'Jackets (8-1-0, 3-0-0 NCHA) are at home again Saturday night, for an epic NHCA clash with St. Norbert.  The Green Knights (8-0-0, 3-0-0) are the defending national champions and the nation's number one team.  They are riding a 37-game unbeaten streak after their 3-0 at St. Scholastica on Friday night.  Saturday night is also the annual UWS Teddy Bear Toss.  Bring a new teddy bear to the game and throw it on the ice when the 'Jackets score their first goal of the game.  All teddy bears collected will be distributed to local families that are in need during the holiday season.  Game time on Saturday night is 7:05 p.m., with the pre-game show getting underway at 6:45 p.m.  You can listen to the game live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in via the Internet at www.kuws.fm.  Jon Garver will have the call.
