'jackets PUSH ASIDE OLES

Less than 24 hours prior, the Yellowjackets played arguably their sloppiest and worst game of the 2008-09 season.  After Friday's 5-4 overtime win at Gustavus, the team had a quick turnaround for a Saturday matinee against St. Olaf.  Maybe the quick turnaround was just what the doctor ordered.  A strong first period paved the way for a dominating performance, as the 'Jackets beat St. Olaf 3-1 on Saturday at the Northfield Ice Arena.

The score was not as close as it indicated, as the Oles didn't mount much of an attack in the game.

All of the scoring in the game came in the first period.  The 'Jackets opened the scoring at 3:54 of the period.  Friday's hero Chris Wilson (Jr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) carried the puck down the right side and put the puck between the legs of a defenseman.  He then stickhandled around a second defender before roofing a shot high on the glove side to make it 1-0.  Art Clark (Jr. Bloomington, Minnesota) and Logan Isley (So. Bonnyville, Alberta) had assists.  A few minutes later it went to 2-0.  Tyler Fletcher (Jr. Calgary, Alberta) carried the puck out of the right corner and fed a pass across the goalmouth to Braden Desmet (Jr. Strathmore, Alberta) who tapped it home for his team leading 12th goal of the season at 6:42.  Kevin Huck (Sr. Eden Prairie, Minnesota) also had an assist.  The Oles came back just a minute later when Charlie Raskob scored on a slap shot from the left wing at 7:42 to pull to within 2-1.  But the Yellowjackets closed out the scoring at 9:35 as Talon Berlando (So. Drumheller, Alberta) scored his tenth of the season (and third in two games) to make it 3-1.  Isley and Wilson assisted.

From there, the 'Jackets carried the majority of the play and had numerous scoring chances, but were unable to convert.  The best chances for the Oles were also turned aside.

Chad Beiswenger (Sr. Moorhead, Minnesota) returned to form after an off night on Friday, making 22 saves for his 15th win of the season, which ties a career high.  Ben Leis made 32 saves for the Oles.

Each team took six penalties for 12 minutes and each team went 0-6 on the power play.

The 'Jackets (15-1-1, 6-0-0 NCHA) are now finished with non-conference play and have eight games remaining in the regular season.  They are back in action on Saturday, January 17 against St. Scholastica (12-3-1, 4-2-0 NCHA), winners of eight straight.  The puck will drop from Mars-Lakeview Arena at 7:05 p.m., and the game can be heard live locally on KUWS, 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in via the Internet at www.kuws.fm.  Jon Garver will have the call.
