RON EVANS INDUCTED INTO HALL OF FAME

Former Yellowjacket forward Ron Evans was inducted into the UW-Superior Hall of Fame on July 17.  Evans, from Carrolton, Texas, is regarded as one of the best offensive players the 'Jackets have ever had.

"Our program began to turn around and become a real contender in the early 1990's because we were able to get some very talented players coming through the program," said UW-Superior athletic director Steve Nelson, the head hockey coach at the time.  "Ron Evans was one of the most talented players of that era.  He had a knack for scoring goals and seemed to get better every year.  He was one of the players that helped lay the foundation for what our program would become."

Evans played for the Yellowjackets from 1987-91.  He played in 109 games in his career and scored 68 goals and 140 points.  The 68 goals still rank in a tie for seventh all-time and his 140 points just recently fell out of the all-time top ten.

"I always enjoy the weekend when we have the induction because we get a chance to see the athletes who played such a big part in our university's athletic tradition," said head coach Dan Stauber.  "On the hockey side, we've had so many great players over the years that it's always a thrill when one of them gets inducted.

"I had the chance to play with Ron for a season and even as a freshman, you could tell that he was going to be one of the great ones at this school.  It's a well-deserved honor for a player that, frankly, was underrated in his time in Superior."

Evans was honored on induction night along with fellow former Yellowjacket sports greats Gene Belmas, Clarence Lacina, Joe Reasbeck, Vince Thomas-Harper, Victoria Sargent, Lisa Gasior and the late Patrick Murphy.  The 1966-67 UW-Superior wrestling team received this year's team award.
