| 'JACKETS KEEP LEAD WITH WIN OVER EAU CLAIRE |
|
It only took 13 seconds. The 'Jackets scored twice in a span of 13 seconds midway through the first period, giving them a lead that was insurmountable en route to a 6-3 win over UW-Eau Claire before a crowd of 950 at Wessman Arena.
Friday night was parents night and senior night at Wessman Arena,
and all of the seniors played a vital part in the win. All
eight seniors played in the game, and six of them had at least one
point in the contest.
The 'Jackets opened the scoring at 11:19 of the first period when Andrew MacKenzie (Sr. Terrace Bay, Ontario) picked up a rebound to the right of the goal and scored his third of the season. The play started with Jeff Herman (Sr. Cranbrook, British Columbia) moving the puck from the left point to Eric Bausano (Sr. Laurium, Michigan) in the right corner. Bausano tried a wrap-around that was stopped, but MacKenzie jumped on the rebound to make it 1-0. Just 13 seconds later, the 'Jackets made it 2-0. Of a face-off, Ryan Kuntz (Sr. Regina, Saskatchewan) stole the puck behind the Eau Claire net and fed a centering pass to Tyler Fletcher (Jr. Calgary, Alberta) in the right circle. Fletcher blasted it home up high for his fifth of the year to make it 2-0.
In the second, the 'Jackets stretched their lead. Chris Berry (Jr. Calgary, Alberta) had the puck in the right circle and drew a delayed penalty. He got the shot away and the save was made, but Seth Reda (Sr. Palmer, Alaska) drove the net hard and poked the rebound home to make it 2-0 at 6:35. Kevin Huck (Sr. Eden Prairie, Minnesota) also assisted on the play. The Blugolds finally broke through, taking advantage of some sloppy defensive play. In the end, it was Nic Weight scoring from the right circle at 11:08 to make it 3-1 after two.
When the third period got underway, things started out fairly normal, resembling the flow the game saw in the first two periods. But once the period hit the midpoint, things changed. Goals and penalties ruled the final leg of the game, with the 'Jackets adding three more to the ledger before all was said and done. Chris Wilson (Jr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) again came through in the clutch, scoring the would-be game-winning goal at 9:04 to make it 4-1. Talon Berlando (So. Drumheller, Alberta) won the draw to Kent Detlefsen (Fr. Lakeville, Minnesota) at the left point. Detlefesen carried down to the left corner and centered to Wilson, whose intial shot was stopped. Wilson got his own rebound and buried it for his team-leading 13th of the year. The Blugolds would make it 4-2 when former Yellowjacket Joe Bluhm scored a shorthanded marker at 10:17. But on the same power play, the 'Jackets would answer. Huck fed Detlefsen at the right point who let a one-timer go that was stopped. Bausano picked up the loose puck to the left of the net and lifted a backhand over a sprawled goaltender just inside the right post to make it 5-2. Bausano now has three goals in his last three games. The 'Jackets got their final goal at 15:46 when Reda found Fletcher out front and he buried his second of the game at 15:46 to make it 6-2. Josh Seifert (Jr. Superior, Wisconsin), playing his first game in two weeks, also picked up an assist. Ross Janecyk added a goal in the final minute for the Blugolds, making the final 6-3.
The win, coupled with the loss by St. Scholastica on Friday, gives the 'Jackets a little more cushion in the standings, as their lead is back to two points. The loss by the Saints and the win by Stout, means the Blue Devils jumped over St. Scholastica in the standings. On Saturday, a Yellowjacket win combined with a St. Norbert win over Stout will secure Superior's first NCHA crown since 2001.
Chad Beiswenger (Sr. Moorhead, Minnesota) was once again solid in the Yellowjacket goal, although he'd probably tell you that he would want a couple of the goals he allowed back. He finished the game with 33 saves while Tyler Brigl made 42 saves for Eau Claire.
The 'Jackets took five penalties for ten minutes, while Eau Claire took seven for 14 minutes. The 'Jackets were 1-5 on the power play and the Blugolds were 0-3.
The 'Jackets (18-2-3, 9-1-2 NCHA) are at home once again on Saturday night, when they play host to UW-Stevens Point. The Pointers (14-7-2, 5-6-1 NCHA) are firmly entrenched in fifth place in the NCHA following Friday's 4-1 win over St. Scholastica. Saturday's game is "Pink the Rink" at Wessman Arena. The 'Jackets will be wearing limited edition pink jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game, with the proceeds going to SMDC for breast cancer awareness. Fans attending the game are encouraged to wear pink to the game. Face-off on Saturday will be at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live locally on KUWS, 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:40 p.m. If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in via the Internet at www.kuws.fm. Jon Garver will have the call.
