'JACKETS COMPLETE SWEEP OF FORESTERS

Now that's more like it!  On Saturday night, the 'Jackets took the ice with much more focus than they had 24 hours prior, and gave the kind of performance that people expected to see out of them in both games.  A relentless forecheck, suffocating defense and a balanced attack propelled the 'Jackets to a 5-0 win over Lake Forest and a sweep of their NCHA quarterfinal series before a crowd of 872 at Wessman Arena.

With the win, the 'Jackets (22-2-3) advance to the NCHA semifinals on February 28, when they will host St. Norbert College at Wessman Arena.  The Green Knights got to the semis thanks to a two-game sweep over UW-Stevens Point.

After playing most of the first period in the offensive zone and controlling a majority of the play, the 'Jackets finally broke through on Lake Forest goaltender Scott Campbell with less than two minutes to play in the period.  Chris Wilson (Jr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) fed a pass into the slot from the left wing and Talon Berlando (So. Drumheller, Alberta) reached ahead and tipped it past Campbell on the stick side to make it 1-0.  Berlando's 11th goal of the season came at 18:03 of the period.

In the second the 'Jackets gave another overwhelmingly controlling effort and scored a pair of goals.  Off a faceoff to Campbell's right, Seth Reda (Sr. Palmer, Alaska) took control of the puck and made a move toward the goal.  From a shallow angle, he snuck the puck underneath Campbell to make it 2-0.  His ninth of the year came at 6:59 of the period.  Later, Reda set up Dane Bushey (Jr. Duluth, Minnesota) for his second of the year.  Reda took a feed from Braden Desmet (Jr. Strathmore, Alberta) and carried behind the net.  He hit the brakes and fed the puck back out front to Bushey who tapped it home to make it 3-0 at 16:39 of the second.

The 'Jackets closed out the scoring in the third with two more goals.  Eric Bausano (Sr. Laurium, Michigan) was on the doorstep and poked a rebound home for his seventh of the year at 6:59 of the third.  The power play goal was assisted by Rob Turville (Sr. Olds, Alberta) and Andrew MacKenzie (Sr. Terrace Bay, Ontario).  They closed out the scoring late, at 17:30 when Desmet, who played one of his best games of the second half, tipped in a shot from Jesse Junkermeier (So. Minnetonka, Minnesota) for his 13th of the season.  Bushey also had an assist.

Desmet led the offensive charge with a goal and two assists.  Bushey and Reda had a goal and an assist each and Junkermeier had a pair of assists.

Chad Beiswenger (Sr. Moorhead, Minnesota) did his best impression of the "Maytag Repair Man" at the other end, going untested in the game and making just nine saves.  He didn't have a single save in the third period.  The nine-save shutout was the 13th of Beiswenger's career, giving him the school record for shutouts.  He passes Nate Ziemski, who had 12 from 2000-03.  At the other end, Campbell finished with 39 stops.

The 'Jackets went 1-5 on the power play and Lake Forest was 0-2.  The 'Jackets took seven penalties for 14 minutes, and Lake Forest was penalized ten times for 20 minutes.

The 'Jackets now prepare for another post-season meeting with St. Norbert.  The two teams know each other well and have a long post-season history.  The format changes at this time, and the rounds are now a one-game, winner-takes-all scenario as opposed to the two-game series.  Game time on Saturday night will be 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in via the Internet at www.kuws.fm.  Jon Garver will have the call.
