'Jackets Crushed By River Falls

Halloween - the night of the year that brings costumes, candy and ghost stories.  Some people may like to take in a horror flick, giving them a good scare on the spookiest night of the year.  Some, would rather take in a hockey game.  Fans at Wessman Arena were treated to both on Saturday night.  The Yellowjackets carried the play for long stretches in the game, and handily outshot River Falls 43-25.  But their goaltending struggled, providing all who dared to attend with hockey's version of a Halloween nightmare and the 'Jackets fell to the Falcons 7-4, dropping to 0-2-0 on the year.

Things got started on the right foot for the home team, but quickly went the wrong direction.  Andrew Harrison gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead just 2:52 into the game.  After the 'Jackets had River Falls hemmed in their own zone for most of the first three minutes, the Falcons came down on a rush and scored on their initial shot of the game to make it 1-0.  After another long stretch of play in the offensive zone, the Falcons came down on an odd-man rush and Andrew Indereiden took a shot from the slot that beat Mike Rosett (Sr. Anchorage, Alaska) high over the glove to make it 2-0.  Brady Horn would score a power play goal from the high slot at 11:34 of the first to make it 3-0 Falcons.  The Yellowjackets would then use their time out and stop the first period bleeding and headed into the intermission down three.

During the break, the 'Jackets made a goaltending change, and Garrett Tinkham (Fr. Paradise, Texas) came in to relieve Rosett.  He was also greeted rudely, however, as Jason Yuel took a centering pass from the left and lifted a shot up over Tinkham just ten seconds into the period to make it 4-0.  The Yellowjackets finally broke through and scored at 11:23 to make it 4-1.  Tyler Fletcher (Sr. Calgary, Alberta) carried into the River Falls zone and let a shot go from the left circle that beat goaltender Bo Storozuk over the glove.  It was his second goal of the year.  But the three-goal deficit was quickly built back up to four.  Just 1:10 later Justin Brossman took a shot from the left that beat Tinkham to make it 5-1.  The 'Jackets answered just over a minute later.  Jesse Junkermeier (Jr. Minnetonka, Minnesota) carried into the zone on the right and fed a pass out front to Braden Desmet (Sr. Strathmore, Alberta) and he beat Storozuk up top to make it 5-2 at 13:36.  Things got interesting a couple of minutes later as the 'Jackets climbed back to within two.  Kyle Leahy (Fr. Fort St. John, British Columbia) brought the puck into the zone on the right and spotted Fletcher driving to the net.  Fletcher took the centering pass and tipped it up over Storozuk to make it 5-3 at 15:53.  It was at this time, when the Falcons were taking a timeout to quell the momentum of the Yellowjackets, when the crowd was in the game for the first time, when the Falcons were on their heels, that the 'Jackets took out the proverbial gun and shot themselves in their collective foot.

First they were called for too many men on the ice, and the Falcons capitalized on the power play.  With all four Yellowjackets mesmerized by the puck, Yuel found Ben Beaudoin in the high slot and he ripped a shot past Tinkham to make it 6-3 at 18:08.  Seconds after the goal, Kyle Clement (Fr. Flower Mound, Texas) took a checking from behind penalty, the second of the series for the 'Jackets, and put the team down shorthanded for five minutes.  The Falcons immediately converted, and again it was Horn, scoring this time from the left circle, beating Tinkham up high, to make it 7-3 at 19:30.

The 'Jackets would draw a penalty ten seconds into the third period, putting the game at four-on-four.  Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) took the puck across the high slot and tried to get a shot away, but he was tied up.  Holding onto the puck, Wilson spotted Brian Bina (Sr. Grand Forks, North Dakota) coming down from the left point uncovered.  Bina faked to the forehand and took it to the backhand, firing it past Storozuk for his first of the season just 35 seconds into the third, making it 7-4.  From there, the 'Jackets carried the play, outshooting River Falls 14-4 in the third period, but they were unable to get any closer.  In the waning minutes of the game, the 'Jackets lost their composure and took a string of penalties, resulting in misconducts for Chad Blanleil (Fr. Kelowna, British Columbia) and Matt Wiest (Jr. Enchant, Alberta).  Fletcher also took a five-minute major for elbowing and received a game disqualification, meaning he will not be available for the 'Jackets game next Friday.

In total, the 'Jackets took 15 penalties for 71 minutes.  River Falls took eight for 19 minutes.  The 'Jackets went 0-4 on the power play and have opened the season 0-7 on the man advantage.  River Falls went 3-9 on the power play.

Storozuk finished the game with 21 saves.  Rosett made seven saves in the first period and Tinkham made 11 saves in the second and third periods.

The loss not only dropped the 'Jackets to 0-2-0 on the year, but also 0-2-0 in the conference, putting them already four points behind the league leaders.  So the hill that they will have to climb to get back in the league race is already getting steep.

The 'Jackets are back in action at home on Friday, November 6 against Concordia College.  The non-conference tilt will get underway at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show getting underway at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in via the Internet at www.kuws.fm.  Jon Garver will have the call.
