Big First Period Gives 'Jackets Victory

Friday night, the Yellowjackets jumped out to a 5-0 lead and eventually put Concordia away with a 7-2 win.  The hope, heading into Saturday's game, was that the momentum built up on Friday would find its way into the picture on Saturday, and give the 'Jackets a two-game winning streak before they embark on their first road trip of the young season.

Well, it did.

Four goals in the first period gave the 'Jackets an insurmountable lead and they cruised to a 6-3 win over St. John's before a Saturday matinee crowd of 667 at Wessman Arena.

Six different players scored goals, as the 'Jackets improved to 2-2-0 on the season.  St. John's, losing for the first time on the season, fell to 2-1-1.

Tyler Fletcher (Sr. Calgary, Alberta) got the scoring started for the Yellowjackets, scoring his team-leading fourth goal of the season at 4:29 of the first period.  Fletcher had the puck below the goal line, spun off a check and walked out front, waiting patiently to get the goaltender out of position before sliding the puck under him to make it 1-0.  Josh Kesler (Fr. Naperville, Illinois) assisted on the goal.  Kesler already has four assists and is tied for the team lead in helpers.  The game went to 2-0 at 9:13 when the 'Jackets capitalized on the power play.  Art Clark (Sr. Bloomington, Minnesota) had the puck at the left point and sent a pass over to the right point.  There, Derek Stauber (Fr. Duluth, Minnesota) let a one-timer go that beat St. John's goaltender Stu Van Ess.  The power play struck again at 14:51 when Clark scored his first goal of the season.  Braden Desmet (Sr. Strathmore, Alberta) had the puck in the right circle, stickhandled around a defender and let a shot go.  The puck hit a skate and ricocheted to Clark in the slot who buried in the empty net to make it 3-0.  Thomas Erlacher (Fr. Brunico, Italy) also assisted on the goal.  Less than a minute later it went to 4-0.  With the puck in the St. John's zone, the Johnnies tried to clear the zone.  Tom Budziakowski (So. Toronto, Ontario) slowed down the clearing attempt and Casey Dion (Fr. Colorado Springs, Colorado) held the zone at the left point.  He let a shot go through a screen that beat Van Ess for his first collegiate goal at 15:47.  The 4-0 lead was enough to chase Van Ess to the bench at the end of the period.

In the second period, the officials got more involved and the penalties began to come fast and furious.  In total, the Yellowjackets ended up shorthanded five times (compared to one for St. John's) in the second period, including two different stretches where they were down two men.  The Johnnies got on the board at 13:20 when Michael Palmiscno got a loose puck in the slot and scored to make it 4-1.  The second five-on-three helped the Johnnies close the gap to 4-2.  Jascha Pettit, who scored twice the previous night against St. Scholastica, received a pass at the right point and let a shot go that found the back of the net at 16:01.

The third period was more of the same, but the Yellowjackets were able to shake off the penalties and regain a three-goal lead.  Talon Berlando (Jr. Drumheller, Alberta) played the puck toward the goal, but it never did find the goaltender.  Instead, it bounced off a defender right on the stick of Logan Isley (Jr. Bonnyville, Alberta) and he poked it into the empty net to make it 5-2 at 9:29 of the period.  Stauber also picked up an assist on the play.  The Johnnies came back again, however, at 15:03 of the period third.  With the 'Jackets shorthanded, Brent Broderson let a slap shot go from the blue line that hit pay dirt to make it 5-3.  The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring at 18:35 when Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) scored his first of the season into an empty net to make it 6-3.

Seconds after the empty net goal, an altercation broke out that resulted in two Yellowjackets, Josh Seifert (Sr. Superior, Wisconsin) and Desmet receiving five-minute penalties and game misconducts.  The penalties are not disqualifications and will not force either player out of the lineup for the next game.  In total, the Yellowjackets took 15 penalties for 60 minutes while the Johnnies took ten penalties for 28 minutes.  The Yellowjackets went 2-4 on the power play and St. John's was 2-8.

Jim Patterson (Jr. Kamloops, British Columbia), making his second consecutive start, made 19 saves to improve his record to 2-0-0.  Stu Van Ess made 10 saves in the first period before being relieved by Tony Civello.  Civello finished the game with 13 saves.

The Yellowjackets will not hit the road for the first time this season, as they travel to Appleton, Wis. to take on the Lawrence University Vikings.  The puck drops on Saturday, November 14 at 5:00 p.m. and the game can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 4:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in via the Internet at www.kuws.fm.  Jon Garver will have the call.
