Former Coach Harker Honored

Former Yellowjacket player and coach Gary Harker is being honored by the City of Burnsville, after working 23 years for the municipality.  Harker, who served as the city's Director of Recreation, will have a rink named in his honor on December 1.
It is the first time that Burnsville has named one of their facility after a former employee who is still alive.

The game on December 1 will be televised on Fox Sports North.

"This is an absolutely tremendous honor for Gary Harker.  I'm not sure people understand how truly big it is," said current Yellowjacket Head Coach Dan Stauber.  "I played for Gary and have run into him numerous times at alumni functions and when on the road scouting, and he is one of the good people in this sport.  A class act all the way around.  It's people like him that make this game and the hockey family great."

Harker played for the Yellowjackets from 1965-69, picking up 46 points in 60 games.  He would later become the head coach at Superior Senior High School before taking over the Yellowjackets in 1976.  In nine seasons behind the bench he compiled a record of 107-154-7.  He left UWS and Superior in 1986 to take the position in Burnsville, a position he held until he retired recently.

Harker is still a part-time NHL scout, currently working for the Toronto Maple Leafs.  Previously, he scouted for the Los Angeles Kings, Ottawa Senators and Colorado Avalanche.

"Coach Harker forgets more hockey in a day than most of us will ever know in a lifetime.  He's a great hockey person who did great things here and did great things for Burnsville.  On behalf of our program and the university, we want to extend our congratulations to one of our own.  It's an honor that is deserved," Stauber said.
