Late Penalty Costs 'Jackets

The Yellowjackets entered Friday nights game looking for a couple of firsts.  They wanted to get out of the night with their first win in conference play, and in turn pick up their first points in the NCHA, made completely necessary by the fact that St. Norbert keeps winning in conference play and is rapidly pulling away from the defending champions.

Mission accomplished...on one of the above.  The 'Jackets took the lead for the second time in the game early in the second period, but a late penalty gave Eau Claire a power play and the capitalized, forcing overtime and the teams skated to a 2-2 tie in front of a typical deer season crowd at Wessman Arena.

The 'Jackets opened the scoring early, as Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) carried into the zone on the right wing, cut across the slot and let a shot go that beat Brandon Stephenson between the pads to make it 1-0 at 3:35.  Wilson's second of the year came on the power play, assisted by Derek Stauber (Fr. Duluth, Minnesota) and Art Clark (Sr. Bloomington, Minnesota).  The Blugolds tied the game with a power play goal of their own at 17:24 of the period.  John Kearns took a shot from the point that was stopped, but the rebound fell right on the stick of D.J. Clark who banged it into an empty net for his third of the year.

In the second, the 'Jackets jumped on the board early.  After Wilson took a shot that was blocked, the carom came to the right point where Clark let a shot go that beat Stephenson on the glove side to make it 2-1 at 2:27.  It was Clark's third of the season, which is tops among defensemen on the team.  Wilson and Logan Isley (Jr. Bonnyville, Alberta) assisted.  Clark now has goals in three straight games.

This season, the 'Jackets have struggled killing penalties, and they have been plagued by taking penalties at the wrong time.  It struck again on Friday, as Clark was called for tripping with just 3:14 to play in regulation and the 'Jackets clinging to a one-goal lead.  It took less than a minute for the Blugolds to capitalize and tie the game.  Former Yellowjacket Joe Bluhm had the puck on the right wing boards, waited and centered to Isaiah Bennis in the slot whose shot cleanly beat Jim Patterson (Jr. Kamloops, British Columbia) to make it 2-2.

In the overtime, both teams had chances, and the final two minutes turned into an end-to-end track meet with both teams desperately going after the two points, but the chances amounted to nothing and the teams were forced to settle for the tie.

Both teams finished with 24 shots on goal, with Patterson and Stephenson each making 22 saves.  The 'Jackets went 1-2 on the power play and Eau Claire was 2-4.  The 'Jackets took six penalties for 12 minutes while Eau Claire took just four for eight minutes.

The two teams will skate in a rematch on Saturday night at Wessman Arena, game two of the NCHA weekend series.  Game time on Saturday will be 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in on the Internet at www.kuws.fm.  Jon Garver will have the call.
