'Jackets Blank Blugolds

What a difference a day makes.  A day after playing their most erratic, and arguably their least inspired effort of the season, the 'Jackets rebounded with one of their best.  Physical play, crisp passing, great skating, excellent special teams and exceptional goaltending were all on display Saturday night, as the 'Jackets picked up their first win of the season in NCHA play, shutting out UW-Eau Claire 3-0 at Wessman Arena.

Lineup changes were made, a new goaltender was installed and the play of the team picked up as the 'Jackets took care of business and moved up a spot in the league standings.

Garrett Tinkham (Fr. Paradise, Texas), making his first collegiate start, was the star of the game.  Tinkham turned away 22 shots, including two breakaways and numerous power play chances, earning every bit of his first college win and shutout.  It was Tinkham's second appearance of the season.

The 'Jackets scored the eventual game-winning goal in the first period.  Just like last night, the goal came on the power play, and just like last night, Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) got the job done.  Wilson had the puck behind the Eau Claire goal and attempted a wrap around, which was stopped.  He picked up his own rebound which was also stopped.  The third try was the charm, as Wilson lifted the puck over Eau Claire goaltender Tyler Brigl to make it 1-0.  Talon Berlando (Jr. Drumheller, Alberta) and Braden Desmet (Sr. Strathmore, Alberta) assisted.

In the second the 'Jackets stretched the lead to 2-0, again on the power play.  Derek Stauber (Fr. Duluth, Minnesota) had the puck near the left circle and sent it behind the Eau Claire net.  There, Jesse Junkermeier (Jr. Minnetonka, Minnesota) picked it up and centered it to Logan Isley (Jr. Bonnyville, Alberta) who lifted it over Brigl to make it 2-0.  For Isley, it was just his second goal of the season.  The power play would strike again before the end of the period.  And again, it was Wilson.  Wilson had the puck just inside the Eau Claire blue line and let a shot go that beat Brigl, who was screened on the play, up high to make it 3-0.  Wilson's second of the game and fourth of the season came at 16:09 of the period and was assisted by Desmet and Brian Bina (Sr. Grand Forks, North Dakota).

From there, it was up to the penalty kill and Tinkham to keep the Blugolds at bay.  Eau Claire had three power play chances in the period, and peppered shots toward the goal, but the defense made the blocks and Tinkham the saves when needed.  Eau Claire's best chance of the period came in the opening minutes of the third.  Brant Marple got behind the Yellowjacket defense and had a breakaway from the blue line in.  He faked to the backhand, went to the forehand, but was stymied by Tinkham who wasn't fooled.  Tinkham would withstand a late surge by Eau Claire, gaining the shutout by finishing with 22 saves.  Brigl also made 22 saves in the losing effort for Eau Claire.

The 'Jackets took 14 penalties for 36 minutes in the game, while Eau Claire was called 11 times for 33 minutes.  The Yellowjackets went 3-6 on the power play, while Eau Claire was 0-8.

With the win, the 'Jackets took three of four points on the weekend and moved into fifth place in the NCHA standings.  They are three points behind Stout and St. Scholastica who are tied for third place in the conference.  They also have games at hand on three of the four teams ahead of them in the standings.

The 'Jackets (4-2-1, 1-2-1 NCHA) return to action on Friday, November 27 when they host Marian University.  It will be the first time the teams have met since the 2000-01 season.  Game time on Friday will be 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in on the Internet at www.kuws.fm.  Jon Garver will have the call.
