'Jackets Win Wild One

Charles Dickens' novel A Tale of Two Cities opens with the line "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."  That was the case for the 'Jackets on Friday night.  Only instead of two cities, it was a tale of three periods.  One was different from the next, each with its own theme.  The ending is all that mattered, however, and the 'Jackets found that the ending was a happy one, as they picked up a crucial win on the road, 6-5 over Stevens Point in front of 1,387 at K.B. Willett Arena on Friday night.

The win extends the Yellowjackets' unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1) and keeps them perfect on the road for the year.  But it wasn't easy.

In the first period, the Pointers were called for seven penalties, and the 'Jackets had six power play chances.  They capitalized once and led 2-1 after one.  Logan Isley (Jr. Bonnyville, Alberta) opened the scoring 3:50 into the first period with his third of the season, picking up a rebound to make it 1-0.  The goal came four seconds after a power play concluded.  It went to 2-0 at 13:48 when Talon Berlando (Jr. Drumheller, Alberta) tipped a shot home for his second of the year on the power play.  It marked the first goal Berlando has scored in conference play in his three year career.  But after that goal, the 'Jackets got sloppy and they paid for it.  While on the power play, an errant pass found its way into the neutral zone and Jon Brockmann intercepted it, skated inside the Yellowjacket blue line and let a shot go, scoring the shorthanded goal to make it 2-1 at 16:13.  It was the first shorthanded goal that the 'Jackets have given up this season.  The 'Jackets outshot the Pointers 11-3 in the first period.  But in the second, it was just the opposite.

The Pointers dominated play in the middle frame, outshooting the 'Jackets 20-4 and outscoring them 2-0.  Garrett Suter tied the game at 2-2 on a power play for the Pointers, letting a shot go from the right wing which was stopped, but then picking up his own rebound and scoring his fourth goal of the year.  The Pointers then took their first lead of the night when Jon Madden scored on a rebound at 11:45 to make it 3-2.

The lead was stretched to 4-2 just 1:46 into the third period when Alex Handy scored his second of the year, banging home a loose puck in the crease and displacing the goaltender and the net in the process.  The 'Jackets pleaded for the goal to be waved off on the play, but the officials decided against it and the goal stood.  The early goal could have been enough to put the 'Jackets away, but instead it woke the team up and they would score four times from there on out to get the win.  At 7:03, Isley fed a pass out front and Justin Faryna (Fr. Calgary, Alberta) buried it upstairs to make it 4-3.  It was his fifth goal of the year.  Faryna would get his second of the game and sixth of the year a few minutes later, again on a power play.  A shot was taken from the point and Faryna picked up the rebound, dragged it around the sprawled goaltender and put it in an empty net to tie the game at 4-4.  The happiness was short-lived, however, as Sam Graham got a rebound to the left of the net and scored his first of the year to make it 5-4.  Just over a minute later, the 'Jackets tied it again.  Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) had the puck on the right wing and fed Berlando in the neutral zone.  Berlando carried into the Stevens Point zone and let a shot go from the left circle that beat goaltender Nick Graves high on the glove side to make it 5-5.  In the closing minutes, the Pointers were whistled for a power play, giving the 'Jackets their 12th man advantage of the game.  With under a minute to go, they scored the eventual game-winning goal.  Braden Desmet (Sr. Strathmore, Alberta) had the puck in the left circle and fed Brian Bina (Sr. Grand Forks, North Dakota) in the high slot.  Bina let a wrist shot go that beat Graves up high to make it 6-5 with just 50 seconds left.  The Pointers called a timeout and pulled the goaltender, but they were unable to mount any kind of attack with the extra man, and the 'Jackets escaped with an important conference win.

In addition to his two goals, Faryna also had an assist.  Chad Blanleil (Fr. Kelowna, British Columbia) had three assists.  Desmet had two assists and Bina had a goal and an assist.

Garrett Tinkham (Fr. Paradise, Texas), making his fourth straight start, made 31 saves in the game, while Graves stopped 28 shots.  The 'Jackets went 4-12 on the power play while the Pointers were 1-6.  Superior took nine penalties for 26 minutes and Stevens Point took 15 for 38 minutes.

With the win, the 'Jackets improve to 7-2-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the NCHA.  The Pointers fall to 3-8-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the league.
