Saints Shutout, Sweep 'Jackets

On Saturday, the Yellowjackets entered their game with St. Scholastica looking for several things.  They wanted to pick up a win to snap a three-game losing streak and enter the holiday break on a winning note.  They wanted a strong start to the game, something that would be in contrast to what occurred the night before.  They wanted to pick up a win against their Twin Ports rival.  And lastly, they wanted to avoid being swept and pick up two important points in the NCHA standings.  With first-place St. Norbert off for the weekend, the 'Jackets could gain ground in the NCHA standings.

Unfortunately, for the second night in a row St. Scholastica was the better team.

The Saints scored twice in the first period and goaltender Brennan Poderzay made 29 saves as St. Scholastica gained the weekend sweep at home with a 3-0 win over the Yellowjackets.

The loss, the third in a row for the Yellowjackets, drops them to 7-5-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the NCHA, tied for sixth place with UW-Eau Claire.

The Saints got on the board at 9:51 of the first period when Jordan Chong let a wrist shot go that Bryan Dalbec (So. Superior, Wisconsin) got a piece of, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to keep it out of the net and it was 1-0.  Just 99 seconds later it went to 2-0.  Garet Chumley won a race to a loose puck and tried the wraparound, getting three shots at it and eventually slipping the puck under Dalbec to make it 2-0.  The Saints closed out the scoring 54 seconds into the second period when Daman Milsom scored on a slap shot from the right point, picking up his first goal of the year.

Later in the second period the 'Jackets had a pair of golden scoring chances.  Kyle Leahy (Fr. Fort St. John, British Columbia) came out of the penalty box and took a pass at the Saints' blue line, going in alone on Poderzay.  He went to the backhand but didn't get a good shot away and Poderzay made the save.  Later, Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) made a brilliant pass to Talon Berlando (Jr. Drumheller, Alberta) in the right circle, who walked in toward the goal but his backhand went over the net.  Beyond those two chances, the Yellowjackets weren't able to muster anything offensively.

Dalbec finished with 15 saves in his second appearance of the season.

The Yellowjackets took three penalties for 14 minutes while the Saints took three for six minutes.  The Yellowjackets were 0-3 on the power play and St. Scholastica went 0-2.

The 'Jackets will now have almost four weeks off, returning to action on Friday, January 8 on the road against Bethel.  Game time from the Schwann Super Rink will be at 7:00 and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can pick up the web stream on the Internet at www.ifan.tv.  Jon Garver will have the call.
