Furious Tie Salvages Tie For Yellowjackets

On Saturday in St. Paul, the word of the day could have been rally, or perhaps comeback.  At the Xcel Energy Center, the Minnesota Wild rallied from a 5-1 deficit to come back and defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-5 in a shootout.  Down the road, the Yellowjackets, on a much smaller scale, did the same thing.  Trailing 4-1 entering the third period, the Yellowjackets rallied, scoring three goals in the final stanza to salvage a 4-4 tie at Hamline.

The game featured a crescendo for the road team, a slow start, an improved second period and a third period where they went at the Pipers like a freight train.

By salvaging the tie, the 'Jackets finished their non-conference schedule unbeaten with a 6-0-1 record.

Hamline opened the scoring early in the game, when Spencer Anderson finished off a give-and-go for his fifth of the season just 42 seconds into the game.

The 'Jackets returned the favor in the second.  Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) had the puck in the Hamline zone on the right side and slid a pass across the slot to Talon Berlando (Jr. Drumheller, Alberta) who one-timed it home to tie the game 1-1 only 37 seconds into the second period.  The joy was short-lived, however, as Hamline came back and re-took the lead.  On the power play, the Pipers employed brilliant puck movement and Jordan VanGilder found Danny Vranek with a goalmouth pass to make it 2-1 at 3:05.  Minutes later the Pipers again scored on a power play, when Brian Arrigoni capitalized on a wrist shot from between the circles to make it 3-1 at 10:35.  It went to 4-1 at 15:30 as Vranek scored his second of the game when he found the puck in a crowd and slid it home.

In the third, the 'Jackets finally got the offense going.  An early power play helped them establish momentum, which they kept throughout the third period.  Moments later, Logan Isley (Jr. Bonnyville, Alberta) had the puck in the left corner and centered, finding Thomas Erlacher (Fr. Brunico, Italy) who scored his third of the season at 5:47, making it 4-2.  It went to 4-3 at 7:34 when Josh Kesler (Fr. Naperville, Illinois) centered from behind the net and found Wilson in the high slot, whose wrist shot found the back of the net for his eighth of the season, which ties him for the team lead.  Berlando also assisted.  The rally was completed at 13:16 when Wilson let a shot go from the high slot that was stopped.  The rebound popped out to Berlando, who lifted it high into the net for his second of the game, tying it at 4-4.

Each team had scoring chances in the overtime, the best for the Yellowjackets coming early when Tyler Fletcher (Sr. Calgary, Alberta) had an open shot from the left circle and missed the net wide on the short side.

Bryan Dalbec (So. Superior, Wisconsin), making his second start in three games, made 23 saves.  Zach Faust, who was making his first appearance of the season for Hamline, made 17 saves.

The Yellowjackets took five penalties for ten minutes and went 0-2 on the power play.  Hamline took three penalties for six minutes and went 2-4 on the power play.

With the non-conference schedule completed, the 'Jackets will close out their regular season schedule with ten conference games, five of which are at home.

The 'Jackets return to Wessman Arena for the first time since November, a span of seven games, when they host UW-Stout on Friday and Saturday, January 15-16.  Friday's game will have a 7:35 p.m. faceoff and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in on the web at www.ifan.tv.  Jon Garver will have the call.
