'Jackets Swept...Again

The 2009-10 season is not being kind to the Yellowjackets.  With so many things not going their way, where do you begin in the analysis?  For starters, the 'Jackets are losing...often.  More often than the folks in Superior are used to.  In fact, they have already dropped seven games on the year, which is more than the total for the entire season in seven of Dan Stauber's first nine years as head coach.  On Saturday night, the 'Jackets started well and got the first goal, but they were unable to keep things going in the right direction, giving up five straight goals en route to a 5-2 shelling by UW-Stout before a sparse crowd of 501 at Wessman Arena.

The loss means the 'Jackets have been swept for the third time this season, and the second time on home ice.  The loss, coupled with an Eau Claire victory, also dropped the 'Jackets to the bottom of the NCHA standings, a place they haven't occupied this late in the season since they finished in the league basement in 1983-84.

The 'Jackets opened the scoring on Saturday night when Thomas Erlacher (Fr. Brunico, Italy) took a backhand shot from the right wing that was stopped, but followed his shot to the net and scored on the rebound at 9:53.  Erlacher's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Art Clark (Sr. Bloomington, Minnesota) and Derek Stauber (Fr. Duluth, Minnesota).  Stout came back and tied the game at 16:01 when Paul Henderson scored on a power play.  Off of a faceoff, Henderson let a shot go through a screen that eluded Yellowjacket goaltender Bryan Dalbec (So. Superior, Wisconsin).  Stout took the lead for good before the end of the period.  Branden Gay intercepted an errant pass in the neutral zone and skated in on the left wing, letting a shot go from the circle that snuck through Dalbec's pads to make it 2-1 at 19:05.

Stout scored the only goal of the second period, as Derek Hanson took a feed across the goal mouth and scored on the power play at 16:08.

In the third, Joel Whited came in on a breakaway, faked to the forehand and pulled to the backhand, letting a shot go that got under Dalbec to make it 4-1.  Stout closed out its scoring at 11:52 when Joe Knoepke scored his second goal in as many games to make it 5-1.  The 'Jackets finally scored their second goal of the game when Talon Berlando (Jr. Drumheller, Alberta) fed across the slot to Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) who went from left to right and tucked a backhand home to score shorthanded and make it 5-2.  The goal was Wilson's team leading 11th of the season (and third shorthanded goal) and came with 6:14 to play.  Jesse Junkermeier (Jr. Minnetonka, Minnesota) also assisted.

In the end, the 'Jackets got outscored and outshot.  Dalbec finished the game with 20 saves, while Stout goaltender Tom Lescovich made 18 saves.  The Yellowjackets continued to struggle on the power play, going 0-4, while Stout went 2-5.  The 'Jackets took seven penalties for 14 minutes, while Stout took six for 12 minutes.

The 'Jackets now have the unenviable task of trying to right the ship while taking on arguably their toughest opponent of the season, as they travel to play at pair of games at first-place St. Norbert, in a Friday/Saturday weekend series.  Game time on Friday night from the Cornerstone Community Center will be 7:05 p.m., and can be heard live locally on 91.3 FM KUWS, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area, you can tune in on the web at www.ifan.tv.  Jon Garver will have the call.
