Knights Drop 'Jackets

The second half struggles continued for the Yellowjackets on Friday night, as they dropped another conference game, this time on the road at St. Norbert.  Looking for redemption from last weekend's home sweep at the hands of UW-Stout, the 'Jackets came out with an improved effort from last week.  Unfortunately, the results were the same.  St. Norbert scored early in the game and never relinquished the lead, going on to a 5-2 win at the Cornerstone Community Center.

There were some positives for the 'Jackets.  It's an old hockey cliché that at this time of the season goaltending and special teams need to be at their peak.  Rough spots for the 'Jackets for most of the year, each of them trended upward on Friday.  Bryan Dalbec (So. Superior, Wisconsin) put forth his best effort of the season, making 40 saves, many of them difficult.  The power play, which had been abysmal, went 2-3 and the penalty killing unit turned St. Norbert aside on seven of nine chances.

St. Norbert opened the scoring just 2:31 into the game when Dylan Exton was found in front and his shot beat Dalbec between the pads to make it 1-0.

The first period was a penalty free period for both teams, but that wasn't the case in the second.  While St. Norbert remained without a penalty, the 'Jackets were called for five minors in the middle frame, and the Green Knights converted two of those chances.  Matt Boyd went coast-to-coast and centered the puck from behind the Yellowjacket net to Tyler Allen in the left circle, and he one-timed a shot past Dalbec to make it 2-0 at 13:15.  It went to 3-0 at 17:43 when Mike Bernardy ripped a one-timer from the top of the right circle past a screened Dalbec.

The 'Jackets got their first power play chance early in the third period and were finally able to break through.  Derek Stauber (Fr. Duluth, Minnesota) had a puck bounce to him in the right circle and let a shot go that beat St. Norbert goaltender B.J. O'Brien to make it 3-1 just 2:30 into the frame.  The 'Jackets clawed to within one when Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) drove to the net and deflected a puck in for his 12th of the season at 7:15 to make it 3-2.  Stauber and Talon Berlando (Jr. Drumheller, Alberta) assisted.  St. Norbert salted the game away at 15:05 when Nick Tabisz shot from the top of the left circle through a screen and beat Dalbec to make it 4-2.  Dalbec got a piece of the puck, but not enough to keep it out of the net.  Scott Pulak then scored an empty-net goal with two seconds to play to make the final score 5-2.

Berlando, Stauber and Wilson all finished with two points apiece.

St. Norbert goaltender B.J. O'Brien made 14 saves to pick up his 14th win of the season.

The 'Jackets finished the game with ten penalties for 20 minutes, while St. Norbert took just four penalties for eight minutes.

The 'Jackets, who are now 8-8-2 on the season, look to snap their three-game losing skid in a matinee at the Cornerstone Community Center.  Game time on Saturday afternoon is 4:00 p.m. and can be heard live locally on 91.3 KUWS, beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in on the web at www.ifan.tv.  Jon Garver will have the call.
