'Jackets Wrap Up Regular Season With Tie

Saturday at Eau Claire, the 'Jackets knew one thing coming into the game.  They had to win.  A win would have done the trick and assured them of not finishing in the league basement.  A tie could, but then they would need help to avoid the last-place finish.  A loss would have taken all the drama out of the evening.

The 'Jackets didn't lose, unfortunately, they didn't win either, scoring in the closing minutes of the third period to salvage a 3-3 tie with Eau Claire.  The tie, coupled with Stevens Point's win over Stout on Saturday, left the 'Jackets two points behind both the Pointers and Blugolds, teams they owned the tiebreakers over.  So as a result, the 'Jackets will hold the 7th seed in the NCHA playoffs, and will travel to #2 St. Scholastica for a weekend playoff series next weekend.

After a scoreless first period, the 'Jackets got on the board with a strange goal.  Shorthanded, the 'Jackets won the ensuing faceoff and Casey Dion (Fr. Colorado Springs, Colorado) carried the puck behind his net.  He was hooked and drew a penalty on Eau Claire.  He sent the puck down the ice and it took a strange hop off the boards out to the slot.  Eau Claire goaltender Tyler Brigl came out to play the puck and was caught out of position.  Justin Faryna (Fr. Calgary, Alberta) was coming down the slot, took the loose puck and put it home for his ninth goal of the year just 42 seconds into the second.  Eau Claire tied the game on the power play when Jordan Singer scored from the right circle at 4:55.  They took a 2-1 lead at 7:03 with Bryce Wilcox's third goal of the year from the left circle.  The 'Jackets tied the game at 10:38.  Tyler Fletcher (Sr. Calgary, Alberta) tipped the puck into the Eau Claire zone and picked it up in the left wing corner.  The centering attempt caromed to the right circle where Josh Seifert (Sr. Superior, Wisconsin) let a blast go that beat Brigl up high.  It was just the second goal of Seifert's college career.  The Blugolds would regain the lead with 61 seconds to play in the period, as Kurt Weston finished off an odd-man rush for his second goal of the year to make it 3-2 after two periods.

In the third, Braden Desmet (Sr. Strathmore, Alberta) scored his fifth goal of the season, burying a centering pass from Kyle Clement (Fr. Flower Mound, Texas) at 14:55 of the period to tie the game at 3-3.  Seifert also earned an assist, giving him the first multi-point game of his college career.  For Desmet, the goal gave him the 100th point of his college career, making him the 39th player in school history to hit the 100-point mark for his career.

In the final two minutes of the third period, the 'Jackets were given a power play and a golden opportunity to win the game.  They didn't score in regulation, or within the time that carried over into overtime.  They were given another power play in the overtime, but again were unable to convert and were actually held without a shot on net.    In the game the 'Jackets went 0-5 on the power play while Eau Claire went 1-4.

Bryan Dalbec (So. Superior, Wisconsin) finished the game with 32 saves, while Brigl made 40 saves for the Blugolds.

So now it's onto the second season for the Yellowjackets.  The first season didn't turn out quite as planned, but there is still plenty of opportunity to make some noise in the playoffs.  The playoff journey begins on Friday night at Mars-Lakeview Arena where they will take on St. Scholastica.  This isn't the ideal matchup for the Yellowjackets, as they were swept in the season series by the Saints, have lost four of the last five meetings between the teams and haven't won in their building since 2006-07.  Game time on Friday night will be 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM.  If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in on the web at www.ifan.tv.  Jon Garver will have the call.
