| 'Jackets Tie Again, Fall In Mini-Game |
| |
On Saturday night in the NCHA quarterfinals, the
'Jackets got more of the same of what they've received over the last
month. A game where they outplayed their opponents, and a game
where they couldn't get the win. The 'Jackets will be one of
the rare teams in the country that will not lose their final game,
unfortunately, they still see their season come to an end.
A bad bounce in the closing minutes of the regulation time allowed
St. Scholastica to gain a 3-3 overtime tie. The Saints then
closed out the series with a questionable goal in overtime of the
mini-game, which gave them a 1-0 win and a 1-0-2 series victory.
The Saints advance to the semifinals where they will host River
Falls, while the Yellowjackets watch their season come to an end.
It's a difficult pill for a team to swallow, especially a team that
seemed to have figured things out after a tough patch in early
January.
The 'Jackets did something on Saturday night that they'd done just
four times in the second half - they scored first. Late in the
first, with the 'Jackets shorthanded for having too many men on the
ice, Tyler Fletcher (Sr. Calgary, Alberta) made it
1-0. Even with a defender, Fletcher had the puck in the left
circle, got separation from the defense and took a wrist shot that
beat Zach Kleiman low on the glove side to make it 1-0.
Jesse Junkermeier (Jr. Minnetonka, Minnesota) and
Logan Isley (Jr. Bonnyville, Alberta) assisted.
But as has been the case too often this season, the 'Jackets gave
the goal right back. On the same power play, the Saints came
back to tie the game just 48 seconds later when Aaron Spotts took a
feed in front of the Yellowjacket net and tipped it in to tie the
game at 1-1 with 2:39 to play in the first period.
In the second, the 'Jackets regained the lead with another
shorthanded goal. As a four-on-four situation was expiring
putting the 'Jackets down a man, Chris Wilson (Sr. Prince
Albert, Saskatchewan) had the puck at the right point and
sent it to the front of the Saints' goal, where they had lost track
of Talon Berlando (Jr. Drumheller, Alberta).
Berlando took a shot that beat Kleiman low to make it 2-1 at 2:22.
But the Saints again came back and tied the game on the same power
play, when Riley Riddell scored just a minute later to tie the game.
The 'Jackets took their third lead of the game on a power play at
15:41. Wilson carried the puck in the zone on the left wing
and fed a pass to the front of the net. Berlando was breaking
to the goal and had the puck go in off his body, making it 3-2.
Berlando's second goal of the game was his team-leading 14th goal of
the year and was also assisted by Derek Stauber (Fr. Duluth,
Minnesota).
The 'Jackets were finally able to hold onto the lead for a
substantial period of time. Unfortunately, they were not able
to hold the lead. In the final minutes of regulation time, the
Saints dumped the puck in the Yellowjacket zone, sending it around
the glass behind the net. The puck then hit a seam in the
glass and ricocheted directly out front of the net, landing on
Spotts' stick and he scored up high with 1:06 to play to tie the
game at 3-3.
Neither team was able to score in the overtime, forcing another tie
game and a trip to the mini-game. Bryan Dalbec (So.
Superior, Wisconsin) finished the game with 25 saves, while
Kleiman made 34 saves for the Saints.
The Yellowjackets took eight penalties for 16 minutes while the
Saints took seven for 14 minutes. The 'Jackets went 1-7 on the
power play and scored twice while shorthanded. The Saints went
2-8 on the man advantage.
Neither team scored in the first 20 minutes of the mini-game, with
the Saints outshooting the 'Jackets 10-4 (about half of the Saints'
shots came from the neutral zone). With the mini-game in
overtime, the Saints played the puck into Yellowjacket territory and
Jeremy Dawes picked it up in the left wing corner. He carried
behind the net and attempted a wraparound that was stopped by Dalbec.
Dalbec dropped down to cover the puck but Dawes took two more
attempts at the puck, eventually pushing the puck and Dalbec over
the line. The Yellowjackets protested, saying that the whistle
should have blown because Dalbec had the puck frozen, but it didn't
matter and the Saints got the win.
The 'Jackets close their season with an overall record of 9-11-7.
In their last eight games, they turned the corner but were unable to
get wins, finishing 1-2-5 in that stretch.
Now the recruiting battle will heat up, as the 'Jackets lose seven
seniors and will work to reload their lineup for 2010-11. The
clock is ticking. Next season gets underway in eight months. |
