Bina Named Top WIAC Scholar Athlete

Brian Bina (Sr. Grand Forks, North Dakota) has been named the 2010 recipient of the Max Sparger Scholar Athlete Award by the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The award, named after the former longtime commissioner of the WIAC, is given to the top scholar-athlete in the various sports sanctioned by the WIAC.

Bina, who maintains a 3.64 grade point average, will graduate in May with a degree in accounting.

"This award is one of those that, as a coach, means just as much as a player being named All-American," said Yellowjacket Head Coach Dan Stauber.  "Most awards that come out have to do with a player's abilities on the ice, but this recognizes the other half of the scholar-athlete equation."

A two-year captain with the Yellowjackets, Bina received All-NCHA and All-WIAC recognition and was also a member of the WIAC All-Sportsmanship team.  Away from the rink, Bina is a member of the UW-Superior Student Athlete Advisory Committee, is a registrar's assistant, and worked as an accounting intern in the UW-Superior athletic department.

"You always tell these kids that you get out of your college experience what you put into it, and Brian really took that to heart.  He's been a great player for us on the ice but has been equally committed to his studies and doing work in the community.  I'm thrilled that the other coaches recognized that effort and voted for Brian.  He is truly worthy of this award," Stauber said.

Bina is the fifth player since Stauber has been named head coach in 2000 to claim the award.  To be nominated for the award, a player must have at least a 3.25 grade point average, must be in his last year of competition or be on schedule to graduate this term and been competing in his sport for at least two years.
