'Jackets Fall In OT

After six weeks away from home, the Yellowjackets finally got to play their first game at Wessman Arena in 2011, and they opened the year with a tough game against River Falls.  The Falcons, seventh place in the NCHA entering the game, played like anything but a seventh place team.  Scott Lewan stopped all 30 shots he faced and Geoff Shewmake scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds to play in overtime as River Falls knocked off the second-place Yellowjackets 1-0.

The loss, the first in overtime for the Yellowjackets since December 8, 2006 (a 3-2 loss to UW-Stout), could be a crippling blow to any title hopes the team may have had.  In order for them to overtake first place St. Norbert, who leads them by four points, they would themselves need to defeat the Green Knights next weekend and also get help from someone else, all with just five games to play in the regular season.

After exchanging blows and going scoreless through 60 minutes, it appeared that the teams would settle for a 0-0 tie.  But in the waning seconds of overtime, the Falcons entered the zone on a rush and Alec Hagaman took a long shot that Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, Ontario) stopped, but Shewmake and two others converged on the net, located the rebound and buried it for the win with seven seconds left in the extra session.  It was the fourth goal of the year for Shewmake, who also got an assist from John Bullis.

If the game would have remained scoreless for seven more seconds, it would have marked the second 0-0 shutout at UW-Superior in less than a week.  Last Saturday, the Yellowjacket women's hockey team skated to a scoreless draw at St. Norbert.  The last time the Yellowjackets played in a 0-0 tie was November 9, 2002, incidentally also against River Falls.  Nate Ziemski was the goaltender for the Yellowjackets in that one, stopping 28 shots to get the shutout.  At the other end it was Jacque Vezina, making 32 saves for the Falcons.

Strandberg, who turned in his second impressive outing in a row and was within seven seconds of a second straight shutout, finished the game with 32 saves.

Each team took just four penalties in the game, and each team went 0-2 on the power play.

The Yellowjackets (12-7-1, 9-4-0 NCHA) return to action on Saturday night, taking on UW-Stout.  The Blue Devils enter the game having dropped four straight games, losing 4-1 to St. Scholastica on Friday.  Game time on Saturday night is 7:05 p.m. and can be heard live locally on KUWS 91.3 FM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:40 p.m.  If you are outside the local listening area you can tune in on the web at www.ifan.tv.  You can also view the pay-pre-view webcast through online partner AmericaOne.  Jon Garver will have the call.

Saturday night is also UW-Superior's "Red the Rink" night, designed to raise awareness of heart disease and overall heart health.  The Yellowjackets will wear special, one-time red and black jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game.  All proceeds from the evening will benefit the cardiac unit at Essentia Health System in the Twin Ports.
